What Is Hyperpigmentation?
It’s harmless and common, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it! Hyperpigmentation is when patches of skin become darker in color than the surrounding skin. This darkening can affect everyone and occurs when excess amounts of melanin (the brown pigment that produces skin color) form deposits in the skin.
Common types of hyperpigmentation include:
What Are Solar Lentigines?
Solar lentigines are tan to brown freckle-like marks caused by excessive sun exposure. They’re usually found on the face, chest, shoulders, and arms because such areas are most exposed to the sun. Ultraviolet (UV rays) accelerate the production of melanin, which gives skin its brown pigmentation. These age, sun, or brown spots result from overactive pigment cells and melanin being grouped together in higher concentrations.
What Is Melasma?
A common skin condition, melasma is characterized by tan brown patches on the face, typically on the forehead, upper cheeks, and upper lip area, which tend to get more sun exposure. Melasma may also result from hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy. UV rays will make melasma worse, despite its original cause.
What Are Treatment Options for Hyperpigmentation?
Most prescription creams used to lighten the skin contain hydroquinone, which bleach darkened skin patches by slowing the production of melanin so those dark spots gradually fade to match normal skin coloration. Prescription bleaches contain twice the amount of hydroquinone as over-the-counter skin bleaches. In more severe cases prescription creams with tretinoin and a cortisone cream may be used. These treatment options, however, not only take 3-6 months to work, but can be extremely irritating to the skin.
