What Is Melasma?

At Aesthetic Laser Center in Beaumont, we help people with loads of issues and concerns. Melasma is one such condition we treat. This condition causes dark, discolored patches on your skin. When it occurs in pregnant women, it’s called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy.” The condition is more common in women than men, though men may get it as well.

Symptoms of Melasma

Melasma causes patches of discoloration that are darker than your usual skin color. It typically occurs on the face with matching marks on both sides. Other areas of your body that are often exposed to the sun can also develop melasma. Brownish-colored patches often appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, and the chin. It can also occur on the neck and forearms. Though the skin discoloration doesn’t do any physical harm, you may feel self-conscious about the way it looks. If so, Beaumont Aesthetics and Laser can help!

What Are the Risk Factors for This Condition?

At this time, it is not clear what causes this condition. Darker-skinned individuals are more at risk than those with fair skin. Estrogen and progesterone sensitivity can also be associated with the condition. This means birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone therapy can all trigger melasma. Stress and thyroid disease are also thought to be causes of melasma. Sun exposure can cause melasma, as ultraviolet rays affect the cells that control pigment (melanocytes).

What Can Be Done to Treat This Condition?

Though establishing a good cleansing regimen is a step in the right direction for treating melasma, often more needs to be done. At Beaumont Aesthetic and Laser, we use PicoSure to treat this condition. PicoSure delivers extremely short bursts of specialized energy that targets skin irregularities like melasma. The rapid pulses create pressure that breaks up its particles, allowing them to be flushed out of your body through your lymphatic system.

This targeted approach allows melasma to be treated without any damage to the healthy skin around it. The treatment varies from 2-5 sessions on the average patient, but may require more treatments in some cases.* If you wish us to treat your melasma, we will ask you to commit to wearing SPF 50 physical sunscreen and a hat to protect your treatment sites from the sun anytime you are outside. Otherwise, the treatment can lose its efficacy. For those who proceed, however, our patients find PicoSure to be quite a marvel!
