What Are Sun Spots?
We sure do love our sun in Texas – and we often got the spots to prove it! Sun spots, also called “brown spots,” “liver spots,” or “age spots” are known medically as “solar lentigines.” Solar lentigines are found in 90 percent of caucasian people older than 60, thus the term “age spot.” They can also be seen in younger individuals after extreme sun exposure, often on the shoulders or face.
Are Sun Spots Dangerous?
No. A solar lentigo is a benign lesion of cosmetic concern only. However, it is a marker of chronic UV exposure and can be considered an independent risk factor for the development of melanoma.
How Can I Avoid Solar Lentigines?
Sunscreen will help! Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and with titanium or zinc oxide as a main ingredient. Be sure to reapply every two hours when outside. Also, physical barriers, such as sun protective clothing, and limitation of sun exposure by staying in the shade, are important for prevention.
How Can I Treat Sun Spots?
Though many seek resolution through bleaching agents such as Hydroquinone, which are prescribed by dermatologists in a cream form, they can be extremely irritating to the skin. Cryosurgery is an option for treatment, too. At Beaumont Aesthetic Laser, we use PicoSure and ICON to treat sun spots, and we find that to be most efficacious.
What Is ICON IPL?
IPL is a skin treatment that uses lasers, Intense Pulsed Light, or photo-dynamic therapy to treat skin conditions and remove photo-aging effects such as sun spots. With the ICON, concentrated pulses of light are directed into the skin, reducing signs of aging, and producing favorable results.* During the treatment, a special wand is passed across the surface of the skin above the areas that need the therapy. If you are looking for a non-invasive way to treat age spots, IPL therapy may be your answer. It is less intense than laser therapy, even though it still uses light pulses to do its work.
What Is PicoSure?
Using PressureWave technology, PicoSure delivers extremely short bursts of specialized energy that target solar lentigines and other skin irregularities. The rapid pulses create pressure that breaks up lentigines into particles, allowing them to be flushed out of your body through your lymphatic system. This targeted approach offers complete and effective sun spot removal without any damage to the healthy skin around it.
